Rustic French Apple Tart

A delightful dessert featuring tender apples and a crisp, buttery crust, reminiscent of a quaint French café.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 24 tablespoons ice water
  • 34 medium-sized apples (like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the cold butter cubes, mixing until resembling coarse crumbs.
  2. Add ice water gradually, mixing until the dough comes together. Shape it into a disk and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Peel, core, and slice the apples thinly. Toss slices with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick and transfer it to a tart pan.
  5. Arrange the apple slices in the crust, folding edges over the apples, and brush with the beaten egg.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
  7. Cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally dusted with powdered sugar. Pairs well with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
