Classic Bolognese Sauce

A hearty and rich classic Bolognese sauce that embodies the warmth of Italian family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 500g ground beef
  • 400g can of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, until it shimmers.
  2. Sauté the chopped onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  3. Add the finely chopped carrots and celery; cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Brown the ground beef, breaking it up until it’s browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  5. Incorporate the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, mixing until dissolved.
  6. Add the beef broth, dried oregano, salt, and pepper; bring to a gentle simmer.
  7. Simmer covered on low heat for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. Serve the Bolognese sauce over cooked pasta or use it for lasagna.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the recipe by adding red wine for depth or red pepper flakes for heat.
