Portokalopita: Greek Orange Pie

A delightful Greek orange pie made with flaky phyllo dough and soaked in a sweet orange syrup.

  • 1 pack (450 grams / 16 ounces) phyllo (filo) dough
  • 5 medium-sized eggs
  • 300 grams (10.6 ounces) Greek yogurt (strained, preferably full-fat)
  • 150 grams (5.3 ounces) sugar
  • 2 oranges (zested)
  • 80 ml orange juice
  • 1 pouch (9 grams) vanilla sugar
  • 20 grams (4 teaspoons) baking powder
  • 250 ml corn oil
  • 600 grams (3 cups) sugar for syrup
  • 500 ml water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 200 grams (7 ounces) fresh orange juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare your phyllo dough by allowing it to come to room temperature for 30 minutes.
  3. Whisk together the eggs, Greek yogurt, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla sugar until smooth.
  4. Gently tear the phyllo dough sheets into smaller pieces and fold them into the yogurt mixture.
  5. Pour half of the phyllo and yogurt mixture into a greased baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden-brown.
  7. Combine water, sugar, honey, and cinnamon stick in a saucepan and bring to a boil, simmering for 10 minutes to make the syrup.
  8. Pour the hot orange syrup over the baked pie and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature, garnished with powdered sugar or whipped cream if desired.
